The *Real* Oedipus Complex
Most people have heard of Oedipus and the sexual complex named after him, yet if you read the actual Oedipus plays of Sophocles it becomes obvious that his sexual situation is not the focus of his story at all. In fact, the big issue for Oedipus is hubris- pride. The tragic situation where he discovers his true situation is caused by his arrogant search for the truth of who killed him father, against the advice of several people who know the truth and know the implications if Oedipus should find out too. Oedipus arrogantly blunders on, demanding his own way, showing all the signs of the impulsive and heedless ruler. Sounds a lot like most political leaders today. Both Gillard and Abbott, Bush and Blair, and most others too, ignore good advice and, filled with hubris, blunder on to their own downfall. "King Oedipus" by Sophocles is well worth a read.
